The Fright Night Freakshow

What is Cursed Essex?

Cursed Essex is an immersive Halloween attraction that blends scare mazes with live performance and themed zones. Set across an outdoor site, it offers guests a mix of horror environments and interactive storytelling. Visitors move between attractions such as Toy Shop, Contaminated, Cell 13, and The Nag Inn.

Each haunt delivers a distinct theme, from psychological horror to dark humour. FestEVIL and Pig Pen added variety with bold characters and unsettling settings. The Amphi-FEAR-tre provided a central entertainment space, giving guests a chance to experience live acts alongside the scare attractions.

Stage One: The Brief

Our brief focused on transforming a plain white marquee into a vintage 1800s Coney Island Freakshow. The concept carried the title The Fright Night Freakshow and needed to feel immersive from the moment guests arrived. Performances would run four times each night across thirteen event dates.

Creative direction emphasised strong visuals and quick audience turnover. The space needed to attract attention while fitting within the wider event layout. Every design choice aimed to build atmosphere without relying on permanent structures.

Stage Two: The Amphi-FEAR-tre

The Amphi-FEAR-tre began as a simple white marquee, which required a full visual transformation. To get The Fright Night Freakshow effect we dressed the exterior with festoon lighting and a twelve-foot vintage banner line. The artwork featured classic sideshow imagery, including sword swallowers, and snake charmers.

Outside performers gathered a crowd by eating fire and breathing fireballs – known as “outside talkers”, their job was to entertain the queues until the next show time.

Inside, red velvet entrance curtains framed the performance space and added a theatrical touch. A blue and white freestanding backdrop completed the stage design. Guests remained standing, so we created a fast-paced twenty-minute show, with performers elevated on a raised platform for clear visibility.

Stage Three: The Acts

Budget limits allowed for three performers each night, which required careful planning. A rotating cast of nine artists ensured variety across the full run. This structure kept the show fresh while maintaining consistent quality.

Acts included sword swallowing, escapology, contortion, and fire eating. Snake charming and knife throwing added further spectacle and tension. Each performer tailored their routine to suit the vintage freakshow theme and compact stage environment.

Stage Four: The Reception

Audiences responded positively throughout the event, with strong feedback shared online. Many guests highlighted the show as a standout addition to the wider attraction. The performances complemented the scare mazes and helped balance the overall experience.

Industry reviewers also praised the quality of the entertainment. ScareTour noted the high standard of acts and their contribution to the atmosphere of the night. This response confirmed the success of the Fright Night Freakshow within Cursed Essex.

“This was an entertainment area with fire eaters and a snake dancer, etc. We felt the entertainment was of a very high standard and added to the overall feeling of the night.”
