Western Nightmares
What is Western Nightmares?
Themepark Slagharen is a well-known family attraction in the Netherlands, located in the province of Overijssel. The park blends a classic Western theme with modern rides, shows, and seasonal events. Each autumn, it transforms into Western Nightmares, a Halloween experience that combines scare attractions with live entertainment.
Western Nightmares attracts a wide audience, from thrill seekers to families looking for a themed evening out. The event mixes immersive storytelling with high-energy performances. This setting provided the perfect backdrop for a bold and visually striking stage production.
Stage One: The Brief
Our brief focused on delivering stage entertainment for two nightly performances across the full Halloween run. We worked closely with a production company based in Amsterdam to shape the creative direction. The client requested jaw-dropping, carnival-themed acts that would captivate large audiences.
Logistics played a key role in planning. All performers, props, and costumes needed to cross international borders safely and legally. This requirement limited available options and demanded careful adjustments to travel and equipment. The show also took place in a round format, so choreography had to engage audiences from every angle without blocking key moments.

Stage Two: Freaks Carnival
The final concept took shape as a fast-paced dark circus titled Freaks Carnival. The production featured a cast of nine; four circus performers and five dancers, all delivering high-impact routines. Each segment combined risk, precision, and theatrical flair to maintain constant momentum.
Acts included fire performances, walking barefoot on broken glass, knife juggling, and climbing a ladder of swords. A human target knife-throwing routine added tension, while choreographed dance pieces linked each moment together. The result was an adrenaline-fuelled spectacle that held attention from start to finish.

Stage Three: The Acts
Visual storytelling guided every performance choice. The client requested minimal spoken language to ensure accessibility for all visitors. Although many guests understood English, the cast relied entirely on mime and physical expression.
Performers used movement, timing, and music to explain each act and build anticipation. For example, an audience member confirmed a glass bottle was real before it was smashed on stage. The performer then walked barefoot across the shards, demonstrating both risk and control. Careful planning ensured quick clean-up between acts, which protected the cast and maintained a smooth show flow.

Stage Four: The Reception
Audiences responded with strong enthusiasm from the very first night. The combination of a striking soundtrack, bold lighting, detailed costumes, and a skilled cast created a memorable experience. Each performance drew large crowds, with the tiered seating often filled to capacity.
Positive feedback followed both in person and online. The horror influencer Themepark Adventures highlighted the scale and commitment of Western Nightmares within the wider event. They noted the park’s dedication to Halloween, alongside its haunted houses and scare zones, which enhanced the overall atmosphere. This strong reception confirmed the success of Freaks Carnival as a key part of the event’s entertainment line-up.
