Cursed Essex
What is Cursed Essex
Cursed Essex is a UK-based immersive Halloween attraction that blends theatrical storytelling with interactive horror. Set within Wat Tyler Country Park, to the south of Pitsea, Essex, the experience invites guests to step into a dark and unsettling world. Visitors move through detailed environments filled with actors, effects, and layered narratives.
The event focuses on creating tension through character-driven encounters rather than relying on simple jump scares. Each element works together to build a cohesive story that unfolds as guests explore. This approach gives Cursed Essex a distinctive identity within the UK Halloween market.
Stage One: The Brief
For 2018 the event was to feature seven attractions; The Amphi-FEAR-tre, Cell 13, Contaminated, FestEVIL, The Nag Inn, Toy Shop, and Work Chop. Our brief was to transforming a rustic barn into a fully realised Steampunk themed circus for The Amphi-FEAR-tre. The production needed to include themed décor, live acts, music, and immersive props. Performances would run six times per night across nine event dates.
Consistency and efficiency shaped the planning process. Each show required quick resets to accommodate a steady flow of guests. The final concept aimed to deliver a bold and memorable experience within a tight schedule and budget.

Stage Two: The Amphi-FEAR-tre
The show attraction, called The Amphi-FEAR-tre, was housed in a 1920s built barn constructed by the Ministry of War. The barn presented several creative challenges from the outset. As a listed building, it did not allow fire or permanent structural changes. We adapted by introducing ambient lighting, a freestanding backdrop, and portable themed décor.
Limited floor space also influenced the format. Guests remained standing, so we designed a fast-paced fifteen minute show to maintain energy. Performers used a raised stage platform to ensure clear sightlines and strong audience engagement.

Stage Three: The Acts
Budget constraints meant only two performers could appear each night. To maintain variety, we introduced a rotating cast of four multi-skilled artists. This approach allowed the show to feature a range of specialist acts across the run.
Audiences experienced sword swallowing, danger stunts, contortion, escapology, and illusion work. Each performer adapted their routine to suit the steampunk theme and tight stage environment. The result delivered variety while keeping the production cohesive.

Stage Four: The Reception
Guests responded with enthusiasm throughout the event’s run. Online reviews praised the show’s energy and how well it complemented the surrounding scare attractions. Many visitors highlighted the performance as a standout part of their evening.
The ticket structure allowed entry to each of the seven attractions once, plus a wildcard return visit to one. Feedback showed that most guests chose to use this option to watch the show again. This response reflected the strong engagement and lasting impression created by the Steampunk Circus.
“Thank you, your team were absolutely brilliant as always. Same again next year?”
